THE TISCHLER HOUSE: RUDOLPH SCHINDLER’S MID-CENTURY MASTERPIECE AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME

Our Listing of the Week requires little introduction. Rudolph Schindler is one of the true masters of Mid Century Modernism. His influence stretches well beyond Southern California, where most of his work was completed.

Now on the market for the very first time since inception, R.M. Schindler’s Tischler House in Westwood is seeking a new owner. This immaculately designed three-bedroom, three-bath home is recognized and protected as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #506.

The Tischler House was one of Schindler’s last completed homes. The original construction costs were estimated at $14,000 but “ballooned” to $17,000 by project’s end. Today’s asking price? $1.7 million.

At the time, Schindler was experimenting more with “color plasticity, translucency, reflectors and light.” These visual techniques are clearly expressed in this monumental three-story street facade topped with a blue translucent, sky-like roof resembling an “upside-down glass-bottomed boat.”

From the LA Conservancy: “The house’s primary elevation resembles the bow of a ship thrusting forward through the trees, extending the angle of the roof’s gable with a glass and stucco, irregularly shaped, somewhat cruciform volume placed on the front. The steeply pitched roof is sheathed in panels of blue corrugated fiberglass to give the interior a tent-like feel.”

The house appears nearly translucent throughout, though the blue tint of the filtered light was so bright that Tischler later had to add plywood boards to block half of the glass ceiling. The kitchen and master bath on the main floor are also topped with glass.

The living room is anchored with a large metal fireplace that was designed and installed by the owner, Adolph Tischler, who was an artist and metal smith.

The main living area opens to a private side garden. Tischler’s former studio is now set up as a fourth bedroom and bath, accessible from a separate entrance. Much of the original furniture, both free-standing and built-ins are included in the listing.

Tischler made no qualms about his love for his Schindler designed and built home. In an interview, one of Tischler’s daughters was only half joking when she said her father referred to the house as his “favorite child.”
